Koh Samiui Road Trip: What to see and do

The island of Koh Samui was our favorite part of our trip to Thailand. During our stay we took a day to do a classic Koh Samui road trip. So if you are looking to explore what the island has to offer, this is the itinerary for you.

We were able to drive around the island and visit many of the most popular spots around the coast as well as discover some hidden gems.

Here are our top tips and ideas for your Koh Samui Roadtrip.

HOW TO GET AROUND KOH SAMUI

RENT A SCOOTER:

Scooter

We decided to rent a scooter and drive for our Koh Samui road trip. It was the most budget-friendly option and it gave us the liberty of making all the stops we wanted. There are many rental shops located around the island. The scooter rentals usually start at around 160tbh/day ($5.00/day)

There is also the option of hiring a driver if you are not feeling comfortable driving. You can usually get a reliable driver from your accommodation or hotel.

Is important to note that you need an International Driver’s License in order to rent and drive in Thailand.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR THIS KOH SAMUI ROADTRIP

Driving this route non-stop would take around 2 – 3 hours. Depending on how long you take at each stop it can take around 6 hours. We ended up taking the whole day because we wanted to catch the sunset and then had to drive back to other side of the island for our hotel.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO:

GRANDFATHER AND GRANDMOTHER’S ROCKS

Grandfather Stone

We stayed at the Privilege Hotel Ezra, so we began our roadtrip with a quick stop at the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. This is a quirky attraction since it is said that the rocks resemble the private parts of men and women. See for yourself. What do you think?

SILVER BEACH

Silver Beach

After our stop at the rocks we made our way to Silver Beach, Silver Beach is a small beach but amazing views and rock formations. We had fun walking and climbing the rocks and the views were beautiful

PAPPILLON RESORT AT CHAWENG BEACH

Chaweng Beach

We discovered this restaurant/resort because we got lost on our way to the Big Buddha Temple. But it ended being a nice surprise.

The owner is super friendly and the place has an uninterrupted view of Chaweng Bay. It was low tide so we were able to walk the sand bars. It is a nice stop to grab a drink and then keep going on your road trip adventure.

BIG BUDDHA TEMPLE

Big Buddha Temple

One of the main attractions in Koh Samui is the Big Buddha Temple. Stop by and climb the steps to the top, you will see many locals bringing their daily offerings. At the bottom, you can find restaurants with ocean views, as well as some local shops.

BOPHUT FISHERMAN VILLAGE

We made at stop here because we were going for lunch at the Greenlight Cafe and were surprised by the vibe of the village, we walked the main beach street which is filled with many hotels, restaurants and shops. Make at stop at the ship in the middle of the street and make your way down to walk the Bophut beach.

SUNSET AT NIKKI BEACH

The perfect spot for sunset in the area is Nikki Beach. We made it there and the place was bustling with music and a great atmosphere. We were able to snag a sitspot right in front of the ocean and experienced one of the most beautiful sunsets we have seen.

Optional Stops:

INTERCONTINENTAL KOH SAMUI:

Another popular spot for sunset in the island is The Intercontinental Koh Samui.

OVERLAP STONE:

We didn’t make it to the Overlap Stone since we spent way too much time at Nikki Beach (but it was worth it) But the Overlap Stone offers a hike and from the pictures, we’ve seen some incredible views of Lamai Beach.

A road trip around Koh Samui is the perfect way to explore what this beautiful island has to offer, mix with the locals, and experience the beach island life.
